The Centre for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) will host a workshop on robotic systems and unmanned aerial vehicles next June in Seville, where the latest advances and developments in the field of international research within this area will be presented.
The event “Workshop and Summer School euRathlon/ARCAS 2014”, will take place throughout 15-18 June and will provide participants with a full overview and hands-on experience with multi-domain (ground, sea and aerial) real robotic systems covering topics such as guidance, navigation and control, sensor data processing, multi-robot cooperation and robotic manipulation of objects.
Three invited speakers, each one being an expert in one of the three domains, will also provide master classes. Two of these speakers are already confirmed:
Professor Dr. Aníbal Ollero from University of Seville (Spain), and Professor Dr. Marc Carreras from University of Girona (Spain).
The programme has been designed to provide attendees with hands-on experience so they will have the opportunity to develop their own algorithms and test them in real robotic systems. The program will culminate in demonstrations of object manipulation with aerial robots and inspection tasks performed by an underwater robot in a swimming pool.
The Workshop/Summer School is jointly organized by euRathlon and ARCAS research projects funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission. euRathlon (http://www.eurathlon.eu/) is organizing outdoor multi-domain robotic competitions which invite teams to test the intelligence and autonomy of their robots in realistic mock emergency-response scenarios inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident. euRathlon 2015 will require teams of land, underwater and flying robots to work together to survey the scene, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards. The competition of ground robots was already held in Berchtesgaden (Germany) and the competition of aquatic robots is being held in September 2014 in La Spezia (Italy). The Grand Challenge Competition that will involve robots from the three domains will be held in 2015 in Favignana (Italy). The project is led by the University of the West of England and the consortium includes the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (Italy), Fraunhofer FKIE (Germany), Heriot-Watt University (United Kingdom), FADA-CATEC (Spain), University of Oulu (Finland) and the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (Spain).
For its part, the ARCAS project (http://www.arcas-project.eu/) is aimed at producing a framework for the design and development of cooperating flying robots for assembly operations. The integration of these functionalities will pave the way for new applications and services in aerial and space robotics. The project is lead by FADA-CATEC (Spain) and the consortium includes DLR (Germany), Universitá degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (Italy), LAAS-CNRS (France), University of Seville (Spain), Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Spain), Spacetech GmbH (Germany) and Alstom Inspection Robotics AG (Switzerland).
The intended audience of the workshop/summer school is postgraduate students, PhD students, Master students and researchers from universities/organizations and engineers from industrial companies around the world. The workshop will provide an opportunity for attendees to deepen their understanding of outdoor autonomous robotics, to share ideas and experiences, and also to prepare themselves for euRathlon competitions.
During their stay in Seville participants will extend their knowledge by learning about the latest advances in multi-domain outdoor robotic systems.
In addition to improving their knowledge in these fields, the event constitutes a great opportunity to meet professionals and specialists with common interests and can serve to create new teams willing to participate in euRathlon 2015.
